A New Challenger Approaches

Excuse the title, I couldn't think of anything clever. Regardless, I'm new here and I hear that this is the place to be when you're new. It's sort of "the Thing." Well I've been a fan of Soul Calibur since I played the second one on my old (and dead D:) GameCube. But I haven't played since then until I picked up SCV a few weeks ago. Really sad that Yun Seong is out.

But I basically found my way here because I'm completely terrible at the game. Getting 3-0 swept gets pretty boring and infuriating. I don't even want to get crazy good, just have the fundamentals down. At the moment I've been playing Xiba but I just know the standard moves, nothing fancy, not to mention I'm so terrible it probably doesn't really matter who I play.

So if anyone's interested with helping out a complete scrub and whatnot then hit me up! I play on XBL and my gamertag's the same as my username.

Welcome welcome. Humility is great to have, sir.

On the fundamentals, there are a few basics to pay close attention to. Someone else can probably explain much better but I'm giving it a shot anyways.

Spacing: Ideally, use most of your attacks as far away from your foe as possible(especially with Xiba's reach). This makes blocking a less effective way to regain the upperhand for your foe. On the downside, this makes it easier for the foe to step around your attacks, but with Xiba's reach they're going to need to guess perfectly or you get a free counterhit combo.

Know Ya Moves!: Know how far every attack in your arsenal reaches and have a good idea of how fast it is and whether or not it'll be easy for the intended victim to counter it after blocking. For example, Xiba's AAK is fast but if the kick is blocked you're most likely going to be punished for it due to it's recovery time(disadvantage).

Advantage/Disadvantage: The simplest interpretation of frame data. Does your attack leave you at negative, neutral, or positive when hits, counterhits, is blocked, or whiffs? The rule of thumb is to not attack when you're at negative because the enemy will usually be able to hit you before you can hit them and give them a free counterhit in the process. Going on the offensive when at disadvantage can occasionally be a better idea, but it depends heavily on this last thing...

Habits: Get in the habit of not making them and figuring out those of your foe ASAP. How do you react to low/mid/throw mixups? What do you do when you're knocked down? Which mixups have your foe been favoring? If you're unpredictable, your foe will have a more difficult time taking advantage of opportunities like tech traps and mixups. You can even try crouching randomly to bait a mid for an aGI attack for free damage. Keep your habits unpredictable, figure out the ones the enemy has and make them pay for being predictable.
