Halo Wars

Halo Wars is a solid game and I like the Halo universe. Campaign seems geared towards RTS noobs as I actually TRIED to get less than gold on both missions and failed. Skirmish mode, though...excellent stuff. The base-building (or seeming lack thereof) is almost restrictive at first, until you notice you don't need to double up certain buildings you would in other RTS due to the upgrades. I'm digging it.

Also, Casper...fanboy-ism went out of style with the advent of the "job."

Very solid console RTS.

Unlike the other recent ones there seems to be more to it than creating ass loads of units and setting them to "attack move" into the enemy base. While there isn't as much micro and strategy involved as in say starcraft or WC3 there is still quite a bit to be found.

I love the way it handles bases, not only is it mildly realistic (they fly in the UNSC fortress thing) but it adds a bit of a new element to RTS (not being able to build whatever you want wherever you want.) After playing those two crappy Command and Conquer games that came out recently it's awesome to see infantry be good. (Honestly though in those two command and conquer games they couldn't make infantry more pointless if they tried)

On my first skirmish attempt in the demo I was delighted to see my forces shredded by an army slightly smaller than my own. But then I went in with more diverse units and did a bit of micro and dominated.

I am a bit disappointed though, that there is so little micro (rarely have I found myself forced to do any of it other than using special abilities at select times for certain units.) But for a console RTS this game is coming out much better than I had expected.

Just played a pretty epic skirmish against the hard AI (defaults to normal). Took me about 15 minutes to win, ended up with three bases to his paltry one. Final rush was three Spartans upgraded with Spartan Lasers, five fully upgraded Warthogs, and six of the UNSC uber units (game calls them that, not me...think they're called Vultures?) fully upgraded with the 2x Bombardment upgrade. He came at me with two Scarabs, the Prophet of Regret, and a bunch of honor guards. One MAC Blast and two bombardments later, his entire army was gone, and his base lasted about fifteen more seconds. Oddly enough, the framerate held up the whole time.

Loving this game the more I play.
