SCV: Choosing a character.

JTK

[05] Battler
Hello. I've ran into some new players who had a difficult time deciding who to play. So now I bring you a guide to choosing the character based on your preferences. If you are new to the Soulcalibur series or returning, this guide should help you in choosing a character.

Selecting a character is probably the most important choice you'll ever make in SCV. Regardless of what others may say, choosing a character is entirely up to you. Do not worry about the details. If you like a character, choose them and never look back.

There are no rules against playing multiple characters, but the best players know one character extremely well instead of knowing multiple characters fairly well. Learning to overcome your character's weaknesses is one of the most enjoyable challenges in SCV, and one of the best ways to improve as a player. If one character isn't working out, you can always try another. Once you've found your favorite, master that character to the best of your ability. There are tons of topics for each character that will aid you in learning, and dozens of helpful members here who will answer your questions.

My goal is to help you understand what each and every character is like. Who they are, what they represent, what weapon they use and how they play.

I'm going to make this as detailed as possible. The information provided is that of the FuturePress strategy guide, Soulcalibur Wiki and that of my own personal experience with SCV.

****BEFORE SCROLLING DOWN****
TAKE THIS STEP BY STEP. YOU'LL RUIN YOUR EXPERIENCE AND MAKE BIASED CHOICES IF YOU PEEK AHEAD. IF YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT CHOOSING A CHARACTER YOU SHOULD TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

Step 1: Personality

If you don't care about personality, skip to step 2.

Do you prefer a personality that resembles your own? Then find one that speaks to you the most. Do you like certain personalities? Then make a list of all the personalities that appeal to you. Here is the list:

- Heroic
- Resentful
- Powerful
- Destructive
- Corrupted
- Liar
- Assassin
- Determined
- Liberated
- Adventurer
- Retributive
- Strong
- Confident
- Damning
- Dedicated
- Passive
- Evil
- Dominant
- Seeking redemption
- Tormentor
- Mysterious
- Allegiant
- Honest
- Vengeful
- Spell sword
- Martial artist
- Courageous
- Angelic
- Experienced

Step 2: Attributes

If you don't care about how a character fights, skip to step 3.

There are several attributes to a character, however, there are three major attributes that change the performance of a character. All three are important, but it is up to you to decide which is more important for yourself. These attributes are Power, Speed and Range.

In most cases, a character will be decent in two of the three attributes. Some are more balanced.

Here is my personal preference:

1. Speed - The ability to hit an opponent before they hit you.
2. Range - The ability to hit an opponent at a distance where they cannot hit you.
3. Power - The damage you do to your opponent when they are struck.

Step 3: Complexity

I've added this step to the thread because I personally feel that it's very important to understand what complexity is and why you need to know about it.

I'm brand new to fighting games. If I attempted to play a complex character with my level of skill, I would never be able to execute the proper input of that character. Even if you've played a lot of fighting games and you're new to Soul Calibur, I would suggest starting with an easier character to play with while learning. I find even the most simple characters difficult to play well. The more complex characters are even more out of my reach.

If the less complex characters are too easy for you, that is when it's a good idea to move up the scale in complexity. If you need a challenge and the simple characters do not give you that challenge, or if you have learned the easy characters and want to learn more complicated ones, then move up.

*Update* You can make a list of who is the easiest and most difficult for you. I came up with this on my own to determine who is complicated specifically for my level of skill. Firstly, make a list of every character. Go to training, perform every one of their moves. If you can perform all of their moves with no difficulty, give them one star, indicating that you have performed all of their moves flawlessly. If you have trouble performing a move, try it several times to get the hang of it. If you cannot perform the move, give them three stars and finish the rest of their moves or just move on to the next character. If you can perform a move, but you find it difficult to perform or you cannot perform it 3x in a row or more, give them two stars and move on to the next move. This will not only tell you where you stand in difficulty with characters, but it will also familiarize yourself with their move sets.

*Most importantly* I want to add that if a character you really like is too high of complexity for you, don't let that persuade you to look elsewhere. If you want to play a Master-level character as a Novice, you'll be learning at a Novice level, which will make your learning process go slower, but the more time you invest in ANY character, the better you will get with that character.

I have broken down the complexity into 5 categories. Choose the one you should be in.

Novice:
- If you're new to fighting games and/or Soulcalibur, this is a solid choice for any player. Easy to learn, difficult to master. This does not necessarily mean you can perform ALL of their moves.

Apprentice:
- If you have played Soulcalibur before and picked it up again and/or you're somewhat familiar to fighting games, this is an acceptable spot for you if no one in the Novice category appeals to you.

Adept:
- If you are no stranger to Soulcalibur, are experienced with fighting games and/or want to play a character that is not too easy but not too hard, this is the category for you.

Expert:
- If you are an experienced Soulcalibur player, expect yourself not to perform well for a month or two of serious training. You will become decent eventually if you practice their moves. If you want a challenging character, this is it.

Master:
- Only the foolish or Master Soulcalibur players play these characters. If you're foolish, expect at least a year before you become decent with them and expect to get beaten over and over again until that time comes. If you're a Soulcalibur Master, choosing one of these characters turns you into a devastating force to be reckoned with, and only the gods themselves stand against you as worthy foes.

Step 4: Decision

In this section you'll find the character's details and personalities, attributes (in the order of highest to lowest), complexity and some notes to follow.

Do not be fooled by the numbers, someone with high numbers may not be the best character for you. Refer to the tiers list if you are looking for the best and worst characters. Also keep in mind that the numbers are for the overall character. So if they seem faster or stronger, it probably just means that a majority of their moves are slower or weaker than the moves you use.

There is a legend below if you're unsure of what a word or term is.

LEGEND:
- CH Fishing: Counter-hit fishing. Tricking your opponent into attacking and striking for critical damage.
- Guard Gauge: A meter that breaks after a certain number of attacks are blocked. Stronger attacks break the gauge more easily.
- Mix-ups: Using moves that gives the player a 50/50 or less chance of defending or countering.
- Poking: Attacking in short bursts, usually 1-2 moves at a time.
- Pressure: Constant rate of attacks.
- Punishment: An almost guaranteed hit of your opponent after they miss or you block unsafe moves.
- Rushdown: Keeping the pressure on your opponent.
- Spacing: Keeping yourself in range and your opponent out of range.
- Stance-based: Heavily focused on stances.
- Whiff Punishing: Attacking an opponent after they miss.

Patroklos Alexander: The Dedicated
- Age: 19, September 13th
- Height: 5'10"
- Weapons: Short Sword & Small Shield
- Fighting Style: Athenian Style (Self-proclaimed)

- Attributes: Speed & Power 7/10, Range 6/10 (Medium/Close Range)
- Complexity: Novice 3/10
- Overview: Patroklos uses a basic sword and a small shield for a very direct fighting style. He's something of an all-around character, having nice speed, range and good damage. Most of his moves are fairly simple to execute and his combos don't require strict timing. He is slightly lacking in range with his pokes, but can make up for this with his slightly slower spacing tools. Although easy to learn, Patroklos is a very strong character; he has a wide variety of useful attacks and can adapt to fight effectively in any situation.

Z.W.E.I: The Spell Sword
- Age: Unknown
- Height: 6'
- Weapons: Sword, E.I.N. (Minion)
- Fighting Style: Self-Taught

His specialty is dealing significant damage to the Guard Gauge, while keeping the pressure on his opponent with E.I.N. E.I.N. is irreplaceable for Z.W.E.I.'s gameplay, compensating for Z.W.E.I.'s weaknesses, such as had range and a plethora of unsafe moves. It is not possible to call E.I.N. all the time, so knowing when you are and when you are not able to to summon him should always be in your mind while fighting, since Z.W.E.I. will be more vulnerable without E.I.N. Z.W.E.I. is one of the new characters in Soulcalibur V with a totally new style, so be prepared to invest a lot of time training to master his unique techniques.

Yan Leixia: The Adventurer
- Age: 15, July 7th
- Height: 4'10"

- Overview: Leixia fights using an elegant, free-flowing style based on the swordplay of a Wushu practitioner. Her graceful movement is her most powerful asset, allowing Leixia to dance in and out of attack range, and to use evasive counter-attacks. She can also confuse her opponent by altering the rhythm of her attacks to break down their defense. At close range she is one of the fastest characters in the game, allowing her to scrap for the win when she needs to. Leixia is the perfect choice for those who like to fight with style and grace.

Whether he is using his crossbows to attack and frustrate opponents at long range, or using the speed of his dagger up close to interrupt them, Ezio has an option for everything. His interrupt ability is made even more deadly due to the fact that a lot of his attacks gain additional Attack Throws on CH, giving you significantly more damage, and cementing him as a master assassin. Although he uses numerous weapons, Ezio is still quite a straightforward character to use and is perfect for beginner players to use while getting familiar with the game.
