  • Games are a diversion, not a lifestyle choice. If I had someone refer to themselves as a "gamer" to me in person, I'd laugh.

Oh I couldn't agree more. People're far too complex to just be labelled with one simple term. Plucking some things out of thin air, could you sum up a:

"Transsexual retail assistant with a passion for collecting garden gnomes who often listens to rock metal while playing old-school video-games and like doing voluntary work for the elderly"

in just a single scant term? I couldn't. At least not without it coming off as derogatory.

People who refer to themselves as these things are doing themselves a disservice. It's as if they're saying that their sole facet is within the shallow boundaries set by that word.

"I'm a gamer" implies you do nothing else with your life. It's sad if that's how your see yourself, and sadder still if that's how you are.

WHO SAYS A SINGLE LABEL IS A COMPLETE DEFINITION OF YOU. PUT AS MANY ACCURATE LABELS ON YOURSELF AS POSSIBLE. KOBE BRYANT IS A BALLER THE SAME WAY AVGN IS A GAMER. BUT THEY’RE SPECIALISTS IN OTHER THINGS TOO. NO ONE ACTUALLY THINKS OF PEOPLE AS A SINGLE THING, EVEN IF ONLY ON AN UNCONSCIOUS LEVEL.
Hmmm.. We need a way to make online tournaments even more of an illegitimate sideshow. Wait! We could allow DJ with no verification method!
