If he took no damage it might have been a glitcher, or he cast greater magic shield (his shield will glow blue). Even wearing full havels with a defense ring you will still take damage.
 
depending on the situation...i think smough's armor has higher defense by a bit and if you kill ornstien first, you can buy it from the weird guy under the bridge at firelink shrine...i may be wrong about that, though. havel's armor also has great curse and bleed resistance, which makes bosses like seath and the catacomb skeletons pass like nothing.

so i'm home and checking and +5 artorias sword scales at B/B/C/C, so it gets great boosts from STR/DEX and good boosts from INT/FAITH. if you are a strength build that is rounded at all, it will certainly be your strongest weapon by endgame.

juece, if you were using liughtning uchi and he had havel's armor and magic shield on...rofl. yeah the damage you did would be shiiiiiiiiiiiiit.
 
That would make sense if true because I haven't seen the defense on Smough's armor. If it has higher defense than Havel's though, then damn.
 
By the way patch is out in japan, tons of changes. Pyro damage goes down, stat scaling gets better, certain armor gets worse or better, iron flesh gets nerfed, greater magic shield bug fixed, ring of fog is targetable just not from as far away as normal, and tranquil walk of peace took a nerf as well. There are some more changes
