Really the market at it is now is the obstacle. AAA games pull in the cash. Mid tier games haven't been performing well for years.
The way I see it, this Indie boom is paving the way for a new generation of Bullfrogs and Biowares etc. The more successful indie developers will grow into larger roles that aren't necessarily AAA focused.
AAA is a rather top heavy gamble and eventually it will implode leaving the current indies to move into that void when the AAA house of cards finally gets blown over.
