They have been doing it the whole time. The only difference is that most people are happy with it now.
The way I see it; if Capcom can release an 8-bit Megaman, do less than half the work, and make most people happy, then it is a win win situation.
I am personally surprised that "8-bit graphics" are the major turn off to them doing this. There is no reason to be so angry with this. There is at least one game play advantage of Megaman being 8-bit. He is small and everything on the screen can be bigger as a result. More detailed sprites often meant larger models in the later versions of the game.
The game looks really fun with great old school appeal. The level designs are way better than most the NES Megaman games also. The Rush items do not break the levels nearly as much as the items broke Megaman 2, and there is no metal blades to make the game 50% easier than it was meant to be. I still love Megaman 2, but they did not skip on recreating the old school experience, and the levels and challenge seem to be intact.
