Well, since I found this thread, I may as well contribute. I don't have many stories myself but I would like to mention two men who have influenced me greatly. It's a little late for both, but what the hell- for their sake.
First off, Ronnie James Dio. To the guy who mentioned him earlier, awesome. When he died, I was appaled at how little attention was given to such a great man. I mean, come on; he invented the horns, he stepped up after Ozzy (in my opinion, he did better), he gave album after album until his death and went on stage till he was brought down by cancer, all because he cared for his fans. For all those years, he made his music as a beacon for those of us who got caught up in the whirlpool of life.
Second and lastly, Bill Hicks. I don't know how many of you know of him, but damn; if it weren't for this guy, I might not have- well, allot of things. Although he's been gone for about, what, 18 years, if you know about Bill you can't forget. This man showed me audacity, how to live each day as it comes, and why we go on. Hicks understood himself and people. Not only did he understand people, he cared about humanity while not giving a fuck about everyone's ideals and what-have-you. What was Bill to those of you who don't know? A comedian, but then again, oh so much more.
"The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride."" - 1993, Bill Hicks (1961-1994)
