The Wright brothers for instance were not laughed at, nor did anyone doubt a machine could fly through the air. They actually had several competitors and people had been trying to build flying machines for years before theirs succeeded.
Well actually the way I've heard it told is that people did call them crazy not because exactly they thought a machine could fly. It was because of the way they expected to do it. You see there had been much research up until this point in time and it was widely accepted as the basis for a working model. The Wright Brothers disagreed and re-wrote the book. That's why people called them crazy. But I'm no expert on the subject.
