damn-I-Suck
[12] Conqueror
You know, I wouldn't have even played skyrim seriously if it wasn't for my awesome brother in law buying it for me (I'm broke).
So I was pretty much sick of Oblivion. My first initial reactions to Skyrim when I first saw it were not good. After playing it for a while now, I can honestly say now that it is vastly superior to Oblivion.
First of all, the graphics are awesome. The voice acting is much better, the music is epic now, the quests in general are more interesting and there is a greater number of them than before. The leveling system is 10x better than Oblivion's. Now I no longer have to spam spells or take a trip to Peryite shrine to hack away at the sleeping NPC's for hours on end anymore. Basically, I no longer have to do boring shit just to have the most powerful character possible.
My only gripes so far is the alchemy/smithing/enchanting exploitable game mechanic. Between these 3 skills, you can one-hit-kill everything including dragons even on the hardest difficulty. My daedric bow is doing over 500 damage right now, which is way beyond overkill. Where they screwed up IMO is allowing "fortify enchanting" potions to be created, without that, damage would return to more reasonable/fair levels. I think the only "fortify enchanting" potions that should exist are the ones you find that add +20%.
I also have a spell caster character (high elf). Right now my destruction spells are free (100% reduction in cost due to enchantments). At first I was like, "this shit is broke", but after playing on the hardest difficulty, I realized that if they weren't free I would be drinking magic potions like water. A dual cast incinerate with all the fire perks does 180 damage (90 x2), which is pitiful compared to what my sneaky archer is doing (500+). Even with "weakness to fire" poisons used, combined with "fortify destruction" potions, I'm still not doing anywhere near what combat-based characters are doing. I miss being able to create your own spells from Oblivion. For these reasons, I think that spell casters are significantly weaker than melee or archery based characters.
Just started a new character today. I'm gonna go sword and shield with heavy armor, and I decided on a redguard. Will see how this goes later down the road...
Long story short, I love this game. I was the biggest naysayer for the longest time, but this game fixed pretty much everything that I hated about Oblivion. I just wish it wasn't so easy. I'm hoping Dawnguard will offer some new challenges. I'm gonna have to wait though because I play on a PS3, and dawnguard is only out for the xbox right now. Kinda surprised that PC users didn't get the expansion first? Strange.
