Obama wins

whiff? The point about taxes has nothing to do with whining. It was there to illustrate not that you should pay more, but rather, that you HAVEN'T paid more. Just because you're paying for college (probably at a subsidized cost), doesn't mean you have paid the full cost of education. First of all, the fact that it is subsidized means that the somebody, probably the government, has already paid a significant portion of your bill for you. Second of all, I was talking about elementary to high school education which is more or less mandatory in America, of which you definitely have not paid the full cost of, and the community service is targeted at.

Say you work 40 hours a week. I'm assuming you're not working at like google or something 40 hours a week, so it wouldn't be a far stretch to say that most of that is going towards your own living costs unless your parents are paying for everything else.

If you are going to a state school, that's already the government helping you out. If you are going to a private school and not on grants or scholarship, you're probably taking out a student loan, which the government has also helped you out with. However, even if you work 40 hours a week, just to pay for college, you're looking at years, of debt before you pay off your loan. You haven't even paid for college, and you're saying you've paid your way out of all your schooling before college? Give me a break. I don't care how little time you think you have for community service, because clearly you are not at the margin where you must give up something necessary in order to do it. At that point, people just suck up the costs, and pay what they have to pay. Its because of people's refusal to pay the full cost of anything that we have to have government in the first place.

You clearly missunderstood me. I said I am paying for my college education. The only federal help I am getting is the government subsidizing some of my loans YIPPIE. My parents aren't helping me with anything I even bought my plane ticket and went alone. My pay goes to cost of living expenses and to pay the rest of my college fees. I haven't even paid this semester off yet because I'm still short.

Also another reason I am irritated is how much money the government just wastes on stupid things. It is getting to the point where fewer and fewer people are going to college because it is just to expensive. So who are you to judge what I should be doing when it is evident by the way you act that you aren't in the same situation as me.

Maybe it's not evident because I don't try to convince myself that I somehow deserve to have a slice of everyone else's pie, or maybe I don't believe that there is a certain way to act when you are poor. But it is in very bad taste to not be grateful for what you are given. I went through the public school system and am attending a very good college right now on scholarships and grants because there is no way that I would be able to pay for it myself. If the government wasn't there for me, I wouldn't be here. TWO HOURS of community service a week IS NOWHERE NEAR what I value the opportunity given to me. Therefore I don't bitch when the government asks for just a little bit back in return for what I got, to an end that I clearly agree with. They are not asking me for more than they gave me, just for a little bit of the surplus that I received back in return, so that they can continue giving to other people that need education.

I come from a background that highly values education, like most immigrants do. That's why it pains me immensely when you pretty much say that you're "free" education isn't worth 100 hours of community service over a year, while its not even the case that you don't have the time since you are posting on a video game forum. That is all I have to say, and it is unfortunate to me that you think that somehow it is required for poor people to act as if they have no class, because I highly doubt that I'm the only poor person in this world that thinks this way. Or maybe I'm just pretentious and have a twisted sense of fairness that relies on some sort of concept of equivalent exchange. Call me bourgeois if you want, this kind of elitism I am not ashamed of in anyway. If you want to argue more about this, send a PM.

This happens to be one of the few things I agree with Obama on. Without service, people start to lose the value of community. The world is just a worse place when that is the case.

I'm just curious you say we don't pay for education but then where does the money come from? China, a money tree? Seriously people pay taxes and the government goes and blows them on a stupid war or they have all their porkbarrel projects. Granted alot of money doesn't come from taxing the poor but it is still a significant amount. If you want manditory community service then it shouldn't just be reserved for young people. Also you say I have time to post in a forum but is it so wrong for me to have freetime. I'm sorry with every minute of my free time should I be slaving away to see what I can do for my community. I mean god forbid I should have an hour to myself.

I love it whenever people say that. It makes you guys sound like you're jealous of Canada, and you don't even seem to realize it. This image is further strengthened by the fact that this sentence is getting really popular in the lands of the rednecks.

We're not jealous of Canada, Canada is just jealous of us because we're so great!

NO YOU SHUT UP!
