I enjoy the game a lot actually. The problem I have is that I get attached to my squad and keep reloading or restarting the game when one dies. It also seems like I never have enough money.
Ah I did that too man, I even did that in the original x-com lol. I mean you can customize them and you get fond of your best soldiers. But to be fair to get a decent result in terror missions (ie stop the aliens before too many civilians die) you're going to need a couple vets on hand. When you first start the game that's hard. It's easier on replays because you know the ins and outs of the system.
You are never gonna have enough money for like 90% of the game. then your only limitation becomes how many alien ships you can haul in each month. Advice I would give you: (No insults meant if you know any of this, I know you're a smart guy from our previous convos but I am just gonna cast the net here, so to speak, and throw in everything I can think of)
Leap frog your soldiers from cover position to cover position. You should never send a soldier anywhere alone if you can help it. Move them at least in pairs from cover position to cover position and try not to leave them out in the open if you don't have a support with a smoke grenade handy.
Don't run into the fog of war. Try to move only as far as you can see and try to have enough AP left to shoot or retreat if you have to. Dashing into unknown areas is a bad idea.
Don't neglect your satellite network. In addition to providing detection and keeping member nations happy, satellite covered countries pay you each month, you might want to cover the biggest payout states (United States, Russia, China) first.
Pay attention to continent bonuses. You get a bonus when you have satellite coverage of an entire continent. Africa's All-In bonus is particularly useful as it provides 30% increased bonuses from all member-nation funding.
Get to the skeleton suit early and start mass producing it. In addition to armor rating and 3-4 bonus health points (I forget) the lightweight materials of the suit increase run distance and the hook offers a lot of mobility. It's a toss up whether you want laser weapons or armor first, but as soon as you get access to the skeleton suit get one onto all of your A-team guys. Any damage that a soldier sustains that doesn't go over the suit's bonus health won't put them on the injured list. That suit will serve you well for a very long time. I would go so far as to say avoid building any of the crappier armor variants beforehand so you can build more skeleton suits when the time comes.
Plan your base for future expansion. Adjacent facilities provide each other with bonuses, in particular adjacent satellite monitoring stations will produce a little extra free satellite capacity If you can take advantage of that without having to tear down a research lab so much the better.
Don't be too afraid to use explosives. Doctor Vallin (or however it's spelt) will implore you not to use explosives because they can destroy alien weapon fragments and other capturable tech. I say a few lost fragments beat a few dead soldiers. Now I'm not saying you should over-use them but so long as you aren't in an alien ship (where everything is valuable), feel free to use rockets and grenades to blow open walls. Nothing ruins an ambush like a missing wall, it opens up your angles of attack and if you have soldiers with kill-streak perks like certain assault or sniper builds you'll appreciate the flanking bonus. On that note...
When you fire a rocket, raise the elevation of the rocket's target area a unit. Provided you're not firing at a mid-air target. This removes most line of site penalties from ground cover and allows the rocket to fire over cover. The result is your rocket will be a lot more accurate and hit where you need it.
